Overview
Focus Features partnered with Community to launch an in-world text line for Obsession's iconic character Nikki, who becomes increasingly obsessed with hopeless romantic, Bear, after he breaks the mysterious "One Wish Willow" and wishes for her to love him more than anyone in the entire world.
Fans were invited to experience the obsession firsthand through a fully immersive messaging experience. Leveraging Community's platform, the activation combined text messages with a first-to-market use of Community's voice notes, recorded in-character by Inde Naveratte. By blending text with custom audio messages, the activation deepened fan immersion, extending the film's narrative beyond the screen and generating excitement ahead of its theatrical release.
The campaign delivered standout audience growth and engagement, building one of Community's largest-ever audiences in the media space.
Challenge
Focus Features wanted to bring Nikki's character to life in a fresh, new way that audiences hadn't seen before, moving beyond the traditional text line previous film campaigns have done.
The goal was to redefine how audiences experience movie marketing by building an immersive experience that moved beyond passive awareness and into active participation, ultimately driving social conversation, engagement, and measurable impact at the box office.
Solution
Focus Features and Community partnered on an in-world campaign to place audiences directly at the receiving end of Nikki's obsession, building anticipation and sustained engagement from pre-release through premiere week and beyond.
What made this campaign so unique was that alongside Nikki's obsessive text messages, subscribers were sent custom voice notes recorded in-character by Inde Navarette. Each audio message was designed to reflect the unsettling obsession that escalated throughout the film.
To kick off the text line, Nikki's phone number was written in the official Obsession trailer copy across multiple social platforms including YouTube, Instagram, X, and Facebook. This alone generated 4K subscribers and immediately drove social conversation.
Following the trailer launch, stunted billboards went up in NY and LA to push the text line even further. The first billboard featured Nikki's number and an in-world message declaring her love for you and asking you to text her. Over the next two days, the billboards were swapped to feature increasingly unhinged messages from Nikki, first questioning why you haven't texted her back, then escalating into full-blown obsession as the last billboard became overtaken by frantic messages including "you wished for this" and "why don't you love me??"

This stunt brought the text line to over 10K subscribers with engagement and click-through rates that doubled industry benchmarks on the platform. Digital outlets including DiscussingFilm, PopCrave, CultureCrave, ScreenRant, and Dread Central posted about the stunt, and posts of the billboards and screen recordings of the texts flooded social feeds with fans stating how genuinely terrifying these in-world stunts were.
To build on this momentum, a select group of press and digital creators who willingly supplied information for the experience were sent custom texts from Nikki including a photo of their house and a photo of a shrine with an image of them front and center. Press and creators took to social media to share Nikki's obsession, further fueling the online response.

As the film's release date approached, Nikki's messages became more focused on getting subscribers to the theaters with texts and voice recordings that said, "Are you coming to see me?"; "You can pick the place and time and I'll be there"; and "I can't believe today is the big day, I couldn't sleep at all last night because I was counting down every minute until you come see me." The text line was also used to promote additional key beats in the campaign including Nikki's Letterboxd account and Spotify playlist as well as the One Wish Willow restock.
